Is It Time To Set Up A Side Hustle?

What is a side hustle?

A side hustle or a side job is a piece of work you do alongside your main earnings to bring in extra income. An example of a side hustle could be flipping items on eBay for a profit or making and selling handmade items on Etsy.

Why set up a side hustle?

In the first section of this article, it’s clear that we are involuntarily spending more than ever which means a lot more sleepless nights for everyone therefore a side hustle may just bring that peace of mind that’s needed.

How do you choose a side hustle?

Traditionally, you could look into taking a second job that requires a couple of extra hours a week but for the most part a side hustle means you could pursue an old passion or interest and potentially turn it into a small money maker.

Look into the skills that you already possess and see if there is something you think could earn you some extra cash. Perhaps you’re an adept with IT or photoshop, there are freelancer websites out there such as Fiverr and Upwork where people will pay for these skills. Maybe you’ve got an eye for photography. Maybe you’re a budding writer. Maybe a talented artist. Whatever you feel applies to you there is most definitely a way to monetise this extra skill.

Pick your passion and run with it!

Is a side hustle legal?

Depending on where you live, a side hustle is legal as long as it doesn’t conflict with your main income. If you are employed it is best to check with your employer first on whether or not your plans for a side hustle is within your contractual rights and isn’t a conflict of interest. Most employers will be happy for you to pursue a side hustle as long as it is on your own time and doesn’t affect your employment.

It is always best to check with your local tax laws to see how much extra you can earn before you are obliged to pay taxes.

How do you promote a side hustle?

Here are some basic marketing tips to get your side hustle out there. Word of mouth is still one of the more effective ways of promotion. You don’t need to spend a penny to tell people about your side hustle and given the day and age that we live in as long as you have a phone and a decent internet connection you can tell everyone and their pet about your side hustle.

There are a couple of examples littered throughout the article of places to promote your side hustle so once you’ve figured out what your side hustle is then it’s time to choose the best way of promoting that product or service online. For example if you are venturing into flipping items at a profit perhaps consider online platforms such as Facebook Marketplace or eBay to advertise those items. If you’re a photographer, platforms such as Instagram or Pinterest are a must. If you’re an artist or a crafty person, Etsy or Shopify are you’re go to, bear in mind some of these platforms do require either a listing fee or a subscription scheme to use.

If you are determined to set up your side hustle, research as much as possible. Find your niche or chosen avenue and see if there is a demand for it. This is business 101. Supply and demand!

Just remember there are a number of effective marketing tactics that you can easily implement without any additional costs.
